Here we go again.
The 2008 stockcar racing season began on Sunday, with a good turnout of cars. All teams must be congratulated as the presentation of the cars is at an all time high, many featuring paint finishes that would look good on a show car.
The first race of the season was for white and yellow grade ministox drivers which was won by #95 Ryan Henderson. Alex Callister driving the immaculately turned out black mini #118 made his track debut, gaining valuable experience and finishing all races.
With all grades in the remaining 3 races Rhys Warrilow #46 drove from the back of the starting grid to claim two victories, Sarah Wade #100 drove her smart new pink mini to win race 3.
Luke Dawson #777 a newcomer last year also had a successful afternoon finishing every race in the points.
The Jaks bar trophies were presented to:- 1st Rhys, 2nd Sarah, 3rd Ryan.
An impressive turnout of Formula 2s saw #426 Mark Davenport take the chequered in races 1 and 3 making a successful debut in his newly purchased car. #8 Ray Corkish won race 2 from #43 Billy O Neill. With the points totalled Mark was awarded 1st overall from Ray in second 1 point ahead of #2 Gary Davenport in 3rd.
A reasonable number of Bangers began the meeting, but mechanical gremlins depleted the field throughout the afternoon. This enabled #16 Gary Crellin driving the big BMW who kept control and won all three races, #61 Shaun Brennan pressurised him in 2 of the races, even with a miss firing engine.
The Jaks bar trophies were awarded to 1st Gary, 2nd #71 Steven Guest, 3rd Shaun.
Simon Bushe’s championship winning Reliant Robin from last year, changed owners over the weekend and is now in the colours of Highway Express, the two Wades Truck Services Robins are also nicely presented in their Pink colour, Simon using an old Robin ran out of time to prepare the car and suffered mechanical problems.
Shaun Cannan driving the Wades #102 machine claimed 3 race wins and the 1st overall trophy from the other Wades car which was driven by Andy Cover and Dave Tweedy. Third overall on their three wheeler debut were the Highway Express drivers Colin Walker and Ian Jones.
New for 2008 are the Production Rods, a non contact upto 1600cc hot rod class. A number of cars are under construction, the three that were race ready put on a good show of close door to door racing, with more cars on track this should make an entertaining class.
#42 Bruce Dunstone driving the Fiesta XR2 held the lead in each race until he was passed by the Toyota MR2 of James Maguire #717 and the Honda Civic of #169 Paul Devereau. Paul taking the chequered in race 1 with James winning races 2 and 3 to win overall from Paul 2nd and Bruce 3rd.
The next meeting at Onchan Raceway will be held on Monday 5th May starting at 7.45 pm.
